I recently watched an interesting, intriguing and sweet movie. It’s actually a 2002 movie and it’s called “Secretary”.  It’s an independent film directed by Steven Shainberg and it’s based on a short story from Bad Behavior by Mary Gaitskill. Two main characters are played by Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader.

The plot revolves around Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and E.Edward Grey (James Spader). Lee comes from a socially dysfunctional family, she is socially awkward and emotionally sensitive. She has just been released from the psychiatric hospital due to self-harm. She tries to start a new life and therefore she learns to type and gets a job as secretary to a very eccentric lawyer. Lee also starts to date an high school acquaintance Peter.

At first Grey is highly irritated by Lee’s typos and other innocent mistakes but it soon becomes apparent that he is sexually aroused by Lee’s submissive behavior. After he confronts her about her propensity for self-injury and commands that she never hurt herself again, the two embark on a BDSM relationship. Lee experiences a sexual and personal awakening, and she falls deeply in love. Edward, however, displays insecurity concerning his feelings for Lee, and he shows shame and disgust over his sexual habits. After a sexual encounter in his office, he fires Lee. After Lee is fired from her job, Peter proposes to Lee, who reluctantly agrees to marry him. However, while trying on her wedding gown she leaves and runs to Edward’s office where she declares her love for him. Edward, still uncertain about their relationship, tests Lee by commanding her to sit in his chair without moving her hands or feet until he returns. Lee eagerly complies. Days pass, as Peter, family members, and acquaintances individually visit Lee to alternately attempt to dissuade or encourage her. After three days, Edward returns to the office and takes Lee to his apartment where he bathes and nurtures her. The pair marry and happily continue their dominant-submissive relationship.

At first when I read about this movie I was very superstitious because I thought that it deals with BDSM and is definitely very strange. In fact it isn’t. There are some weird moments in this movie but overall it’s still a story about two broken and isolated people finding each other and both of them trying to come to terms with who they are and how they fit into this world.  So I actually liked the movie and was glad that I decided to watch it.
